Barebooted until Hancock Loop trail, then slapped on the microspikes until I got back to the car. I went up North Hancock and down South Hancock. The uphill stretch to North Hancock is pretty solid in microspikes (and I saw another fella looking pretty comfortable in showshoes. It is possible that crampons might be helpful on this stretch to help with kicksteps, but again, the spikes worked fine. The trail between the two peaks is a little softer and could probably use some snowshoe love, but is absolutely fine with spikes as well. You'll posthole if you step off-trail, but the monorail is setting in nicely. Coming down South Hancock is pretty slick from the butt sliders, so watch your step going either up or down that section. All in all a beautiful day (and a little warmer!) out in the mountains. |
