Only 1 car in the lot when I pulled in at 9 am. 7 when leaving at 1 pm. VERY cold, due to the wind. The lower half of Liberty Spring Trail was packed enough for spikes. Couple of inches of fresh powder started around 2,100 ft and quickly got deeper as we went higher. Strong winds had blown snow into the trail, completely filling it in. 3 of us broke trail in snowshoes, in 2+ ft of soft powder. We passed one solo hiker who had turned around due to the cold and deep snow (didn't have snowshoes). We climbed to the tentsite, where we called it a day and butt-sled back down. We passed a couple other small groups on the descent, none of which had snowshoes. Highly doubt they made it as far as we did, as the wind was quickly filling in our tracks behind us.
My coldest hike to date. Snowshoes are a necessity up high right now! Stay safe out there :) |
