Peaks
Peaks Ore Hill, NH
Trails
Trails: Atwell Hill Trail, Ore Hill Trail, Ore Hill Tentsite spur
Date of Hike
Date of Hike: Sunday, January 24, 2021
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: The parking areas for the AT crossings on Route 25A and 25C are both plowed and had plenty of space today.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Snow - Packed Powder/Loose Granular, Snow - Unpacked Powder, Snow - Drifts
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment: Snowshoes, Light Traction
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: A bunch of minor ones, but they were all iced over and/or had good stepping-stones. Nothing was difficult at all, and no major crossings are on this route. However, there were several lengthy stretches of heavily eroded trail, which gives me the impression that these trails are probably quite wet in April and May.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: A few blowdowns, but they were easy to get across. The sign for the Ore Hill Tentsite is only half there - a chunk of it has fallen off.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: If your dog can handle the below-zero wind chills we experienced today, then I guess they'd be fine.
Bugs
Bugs: Hahahahaha!
Lost and Found
Lost and Found: Nada.

Comments
Comments: This was a fun and fairly easy traverse through a winter wonderland. Atwell Hill Trail didn't have a whole lot of snow - just 1-2 inches of powder on top of a mostly supportive base. It had been used by one or two people previously, but was certainly not packed out. I barebooted it while my hiking partner used micro-spikes - either of those would work. No issues with postholing.

Ore Hill Trail was untouched, and since it is at a slightly higher elevation, it had more snow - about 4-6 inches of powder on top of the solid base. We broke out the entire trail - I used snowshoes, and I'd recommend them for now since the snow is not consolidated yet. A couple sections of the trail were actively drifting. The trail was beautiful, though - lots of snow on the trees and bushes, and there were views through the trees at several points.

It was a cold and windy day, but we stayed warm and had a great time.
