Wanted to do a large loop today and finish up by taking the eastern arm of Jesus Valley Beaver Pond Trail from Old Stage Road. When I got to the 0.1 mile connector trail at the southern end of the JVBP Trail (about 0.1 mile from the end of Jesus Valley Rd), the trail and the land surrounding the trail were heavily posted with No Trespassing signs, and "No Hiking" handwritten on the signs. The signs go up the trail on both sides of the trail as far as I could see. I backtracked on the Old Stage Road, intending to reclimb Straightback, but 0.3 mile up the Blueberry Pasture Trail, there was an old logging road with a sign "Alternate route to Mt Major." I took it and it brought me out to the the Straightback Mtn Trail, 0.1 mile from its junction with the JVBP Tr. I went south on JVBP and came to the east and west junction. The "No Trespassing" signs start at this junction, and the trail is signed every 20 feet down the trail, as far as you can see. So that 0.1 mile section of trail is closed.
Other than that, Brook Trail is a river of ice half way up, and the lower sections of trails are a mix of rock, ice and snow. I alternated between beater spikes and new spikes all day. |
