Well-packed and firm from MLK traffic. I used spikes all the way up & down but snowshoes would have also been fine on the upper half.
The trail was in great shape today and pretty fast. I had snowshoes with me but never used them because the trail was holding up quite well with no postholing. I forgot how steady & steep the upper half of this trail is, not technical but still a great workout. The summit loop was a bit more powdery on the east side but still a solid monorail. I originally planned to snowshoe up Tripoli Road and take the steeper side of Mt Tecumseh Trail but got a late start. Total time for the round trip was 2:07 and this was peak #22 (in 12 hikes) in my quest for the single-season Winter 48. If conditions stay like this I'll try to link up Cannon/The Kinsmans or Galehead/The Twins in separate loops or round trips. But first Mt Liberty & Flume on Tuesday, Garfield on Thursday and maybe Whiteface/Passaconaway or The Osceolas later in the week. |
