Comments
Comments: Despite overcast skies this was a great day to be in the woods and doing a mountain I had never done. There was no snow on Shannon Brook trail when I started but about 3/10ths of a mile in I put on spikes mainly because of the ice. Spikes remained on the rest of the hike. Small amounts of snow in the woods at the start of Shannon Brook trail, increasing to a few inches over Bald Knob cutoff trail and then maybe 4 to 6 inches well packed snow on Bald Knobb Trail. Once I got on Turtleback Trail the snow depth slowly increased until it was maybe 9 inches to a foot at the final cutoff for the summit. However the trail was well packed and spikes were not an issue. I did not posthole and never felt I needed to be wearing snowshoes. The last half mile to the summit saw at least a foot and a half of snow and if you stay on the path no problems with just spikes.
