Comments
Comments: Microspikes the whole way. The road has a thin layer of snow, so depending on where you walk you may hear the microspikes scraping. There isn't a packed out path like I often find on Zealand Rd, primarily because this is a snowmobile route, so I burned more energy than expected finding the best snow and slipping a bit with each step. Maybe I should have donned snowshoes. Signal Ridge is well packed to the the base of the switchbacks. There of course is a few ice sections, some slush which can be avoided, and rocks. If I did it again under these conditions I'd bring my rock spikes because there wasn't enough ice to warrant a sharper pair. The switchbacks, and even more so the final climb to the summit, are a mess. The culprit is glissading. There are deep ruts and loose snow in the trail from such action. The cantilever and steep trail are what make the final climb even worse. Given that this was the second hike in my day the extra work on the climb was frustrating. Still, the sunset and just being out there overshadows crappy trail conditions. One person I met, who had a board in hand, said he had one of the best times of his life out on Vose Spur. Two others had made the climb up Desolation trail.
