Hiking Trail Conditions Report
Peaks
Peaks North Kinsman, South Kinsman, NH
Trails
Trails: Mt. Kinsman Trail, Kinsman Ridge Trail
Date of Hike
Date of Hike: Thursday, January 7, 2021
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: Lot is plowed, but you're driving on hard-pack snow. As always, use caution.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Snow - Packed Powder/Loose Granular
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment: Light Traction, Traction
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: One-hop wonders throughout. There were a couple where the ice bridges felt a tad thin, so beware at the obvious points.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: Trail was in fine shape top to bottom. There are a couple of fallen, leaning trees, but nothing that obstructs the trail in a meaningful way, nor will slow you down. The snow is about 2-4 inches bottom to top, with only occasional drifts of maybe a couple-three more inches on top of that. Nothing to get wound up about. Spikes seemed fine for many. (I wore Kahtoola K-10s, which were perfect, IMHO.) The only snowshoes I saw were being carried, not worn, and indeed, they'd have been overkill, bordering on an outright hindrance. For at least the next few days, revel in a trail where you can wear lightweight traction, instead of heavy, clunky snowshoes!
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: A lovely spaz of a black lab pup that had an incurable case of the zoomies, and a sense of self that was far bigger than her little doggy body. And another pup that looked like some kind of miniature collie. Both having a wonderful time on the trail.
Bugs
Bugs:
Lost and Found
Lost and Found: One purple bandana, left at the trailhead sign.

Comments
Comments: I was told there would be clear skies! Alas, that was not to be. Someone with more meteorological training than I can explain whether I'm right: Kinsman Ridge seemed to be the wall that blocked clouds from advancing over the Whites from the west. I didn't get a reliably clean view until I was driving home, but there it was, clear skies over the rest of the Whites. Boo! That said, the trail was in fine shape. It was a very easy-going hike. I knocked the Kinsmans off my winter 48 list, and now have only 17 to go.

Pictures and a more detailed write-up are on my blog, as always. Please consider subscribing.
