This was a good hike of about 5 miles, of which about a mile+ was bushwhacking to Chase Pond Peak or Snow Mountain (as the sign with the moose/deer jaw said). We didn't use snow shoes because ground was frozen and snow was minimal depth. Microspikes definitely needed. At the end of it we tried to bushwhack across a marshy area near or on Chase Pond, thinking it would be frozen solid, it was not and one of group members went through the ice up the knee and got the inside of the boots soaked. Thankfully it was at the end of the hike. While Chase Pond appears solidly frozen some of the marshy areas around it are not yet. |
