I needed a relaxing single 4000-footer today and Hale was the perfect choice. Nice 2-mile walk on Zealand road which was nicely packed but got powdery close to the Hale Brook trailhead so I switched to snowshoes right before the trail. Recent 3-6" snowfall was holding up well with one snowshoer ahead of me and the monorail was already re-established and the steep, narrow sidehill traverse was quite easy. Walked around at the summit and saw that Lend-a-Hand was well broken out. But the old Fire Warden's trail was beautiful & firm and I wish I had the time (or a spotted car) to go down that way and then take North Twin Trail out to the road. But I headed back down quickly (met a couple snowshoers going up), moved fast down Zealand Road and took the unbroken snowmobile trail the last .8 mile. Hale marks the 12th 4000 footer in 7 hikes since 12/24 with the single-season Winter 48 as the ultimate goal. We do need more snow but trail conditions are so much faster than last Winter! Total time from parking area, up & down Hale Brook Trail & back 4:15 at a steady pace. |
