Started out with snowshoes at the trailhead, switched to crampons at the hut to go up Monroe (microspikes probably would've been fine here), switched to microspikes from Monroe to Franklin; there were some stretches here where snowshoes would've been better, only to have conditions go back to ice/rock. I went back to crampons for the descent of Ammo (maybe microspikes would've worked here, depending how lucky you felt, but butt-sliders cleared off a lot of snow from the icy steep sections, and I was happy to have crampons), and finally went back to microspikes from the Gem Pool to trailhead. The last 1.5 mile back to the trailhead was packed down a lot by the end of the day, and there was a lot of exposed rock, pretty bony for snowshoes. |
