Comments
Comments: Expected a nice amount of semi-consolidated powder after yesterday's storm, so we started in snowshoes. That didn't last long because there was only 2" down low. Switched to microscopes until we reached the steep climb. By this time there was closer to 6" of semi-consolidated powder and we switched back to snowshoes since the spikes weren't grabbing enough solid ground anymore. The views from the cliff were mostly socked in. Dammit, oh well. We opted for spikes instead of snowshoes to descend because we wanted to move quickly after a painfully slow ascent. This worked OK, but snowshoes would give steadier footing. Bottom line is that there is an awkward amount of snow out there. Enough to make spikes slip around, but still bony enough to make snowshoes slowshoes. I recommend packing both spikes and snowshoes. Expect to use both.
