Hiking Trail Conditions Report
Peaks
Peaks East Osceola, Mt. Osceola, NH
Trails
Trails: Greeley Ponds Trail, Mt. Osceola Trail
Date of Hike
Date of Hike: Friday, January 1, 2021
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: Main parking lot was full by ~10am, but spillover parking both at the ski trailhead and further up the Kanc were totally open. A good amount of folks parked on the side of the road when we got back too.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Ice - Blue, Snow - Packed Powder/Loose Granular
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment: Light Traction
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: The main river crossing right near the beginning is mostly frozen enough to easily dry hop. Some of the smaller streams aren't frozen over yet, but easy enough to jump.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: Some muddy sections and some bog bridges that could use some repairs, but nothing that really got in the way of the hike
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: We hiked up with our Border Collie/Husky mix, who is still relatively new to the snow. We had some minor issues with ice balling in her paws, but mostly fine - and she probably benefited from having her claws to go up some of the more icy patches. There were several dogs (medium-small to large) out on the trail and only noticed one wearing boots, so should be doable as long as the fluff on their paws is trimmed enough and they can make the rock scrambles.
Bugs
Bugs: n/a thank you winter!
Lost and Found
Lost and Found: Someone lost a pair of glasses on the side of the trail, relatively close to the big stream crossing

Comments
Comments: Excellent trail conditions, though with the storm coming in tomorrow, I'm sure they won't last. Just enough snow to let you use microspikes, but not enough to have to trudge through. Some trickier icy bits - two tricky spots on the way up East Peak and then the chimney on the way up the main peak, but the bypass (and the bypass around the bypass) were very doable. (For what it's worth, two members of our party did go up the chimney, so to each their own adventure...)

We saw one man in crampons, but everyone else seemed to be getting by fine with microspikes.
