Temps were in the upper 40's and the trail was really getting sloppy. The ledges were sill covered with packed snow but quite a bit melted away on the descent. |

It was the start of the Christmas Thaw and the first peak in my attempt at the single-season Winter 48. There was minimal snow cover and I didn't put micro spikes n until just below the start of the ledges. The trail was firm with a few patches of ice which were already starting to melt away. Once above the ledges the trail remained firm all the way to the summit. It was very foggy and so windy I could not stand up on the actual summit. I made my way down at a relaxed pace and switched to crampons above the ledges; there was enough good ice left on the really steep parts. Switched back to spikes and made it back down although it was much slushier on the lower part. Total time 4:45 which was pretty slow. |
