Decided to do the 13.5 mile loop instead of just going up/down Zeta Pass. Started out in micro spikes. 19-Mile Brook had a lot of ice and hardly any snow cover but was fast. Changed to crampons to ascend the steep side of Carter Dome which was firm & not tricky. Once I reached the summit the trail was well-broken in for a fast descent down to Zeta Pass. Would have gone out to Mt Hight but it was unbroken and time was a factor. Reached Zeta Pass quickly and headed north on Carter-Moriah which was also firm and well broken-in with a few inches of recent snow. Headed down North Carter Trail which was at least half hard ice so I kept crampons on until about a mile after the jct with South Imp. South Imp was a miserable mixed melange of frozen washout, debris, shallow pools and the 'usual' annoying rocks which had barely any snow cover. The entire 13.5 mile loop took 6:15. If I had left an hour earlier I would have gone up to Wildcat A which was well-packed. This was the 4th hike in my attempt at the single-season Winter 48. |
