A fine day in the forest, for sure! Continuing my Bill Belichick "No Days Off" hiking staycation. Ended up running into Chef and Erik at the trailhead and hiked with eachother for the majority of the day. Trails to about 3000 feet are still rocky, rooty with a dusting of snow. After that the snow depth increases to a whopping few inches of hard pack - all of which have bullet ice underneath. I laid fresh tracks across KRT from North to South, and was rejoined on the saunter above timber to the throne. A great day of getting back into the feeling of true, bitter winter. Temps easily below zero with the chills today. Saw several trampers sporting actual mountaineering crampons, which could absolutely be used from about 3600 feet on MKT, to South Kinsman, and back. I thought I loved cheap thrills and wore my rock spikes - but after Tarzan swinging and a few near death experiences, after the hike I quite literally got into my car and drove to Lahouts and bought new ones - ha! |
