Comments
Comments: A day like this is how you turn your good spikes into rock spikes. We barebooted until just after the 19mi/Carter Dome intersection. Intermittent snow and ice up to that point, mostly you could walk around it with ease and some attention units. Shortly after that we switched to spikes for the rest of the trip both out and back. Rocks, ice, flowing water. Wash, rinse repeat. Some blue ice on the way up to Wildcat A once on WRT. Didn't think much about it going up, much more of a hazard on the return trip. But that's mostly near the top. The top of A has some condensed snowpack left and is how winter hiking is SUPPOSED to be. Concrete highway if you stay on the monorail. Enjoy it while it lasts. The descents southbound from A to D can be treacherous. It's just very steep with frequent sheets of blue ice. Heading back D-A not so much of a problem, you can just stomp right up them with your hopefully not-yet-too-blunted spikes. Bottom line: we're back to a kind of nightmare stick season. Think snow.
