I used micro spikes the entire hike. The snow has melted significantly at lower elevations. Greeley pond trail was ice, frozen mud, mud, rock, and standing water. It was easy to avoid the water and mud. The trail heading up to East Osceola was icy and rocky. It felt more like a late spring hike than a winter one. Overall I thought the conditions were great. The ice and exposed rock is manageable. Of the 20 or so people I saw all wore spikes except one guy in crampons. The trail between the summits was well packed and in good shape. I was nervous about the chimney so I did the bypass of the bypass, if you follow my tracks I went far to the right on a bushwhack. The whack was easier coming down than going up. Other people were able to either climb the chimney or use the normal bypass. I also met some nice people who were happy to hear I was writing a report so they didn’t have to. |
