Microspikes all the way up and down to the junction with the shelter where I put the crampons on and kept on until 0.1 above the trailhead where I barebooted to the car. Spikes were fine going up as we had a nice fresh trail but definitely glad to have the crampons going down as everything got super packed down and consolidated and there is a lot of steep, tough icy spots.
If you don't have crampons or microspikes, definitely avoid this route until the next major storm; snowshoes are useless due to the combination of ice and lots of exposed rocks. It becomes much better above the junction with the shelter with both footing and traction improving due to the transition to packed snow and little ice with some exposed rocks. Above treeline there is a lot of wind scaur resulting in a combo of ice and exposed rocks. There was a very mean NW wind today and I recommend bringing your goggles and face/neck warmer. |
