Peaks
Peaks Cooley Hill, NH
Trails
Trails: Jericho Road Trail
Date of Hike
Date of Hike: Sunday, December 27, 2020
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: The shoulder was just big enough to get all four wheels off the pavement. The trail sign is not really visible from the road, but there's a large green John Deere machine right there, so just look for that.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Dry Trail, Snow - Trace/Minimal Depth, Wet Trail, Wet/Slippery Rock, Standing/Running Water on Trail
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment:
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: Many drainages were running, but they were all easy rock hops.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: A couple of blowdowns, but nothing difficult to get past. The first junction at 0.3 miles has a hiker sign telling you to continue straight. At the clearing 1.3 miles in, just continue straight through it and there's a yellow blaze on a tree on the other side. Trail was easy to follow. Some wet areas, but considering all the rain we got on Thursday, that's to be expected.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: I guess.
Bugs
Bugs: None.
Lost and Found
Lost and Found: Nada.

Comments
Comments: I never thought I'd be able to say this at the end of December, but... I barebooted the entire hike without any issues. There was only a dusting of snow on the ground - nowhere near enough for snowshoes. And there was much less ice than I expected. I was ready for the entire upper part of the trail to be a river of ice, but instead there wasn't very much of it, and the little ice that was there was easily avoidable.

The logging that the WMG mentions in the description for this trail has happened. The trail goes alongside several large logging cuts, which are ugly but also provide new views that weren't there previously. Grades are almost all gentle, and only moderate in the upper 0.6 miles when the trail climbs the cone of the hill.

Snow flurries were in the air all day, but there was very little accumulation. I didn't see anyone else on the trail.
