Minimal trail markers, although generally easy to follow. Signage to trailhead was non-existent so local knowledge helpful. Follow signs to campsites up the hill to Sunset Waterfront. |

Mt. Shannon Trail (Yellow Trail)
Quiet day, one car in the lot. Cold and gusty winds on arrival. Head up the hill towards the large, glassed building (dining hall), and then follow the path up the hill and to the left until you reach Sunset Waterfront. Continue onto the main trail.
Ascent was leeward. Trail was packed icy granular snow after the recent thaw. Segments were icy or wet requiring waterproof shoes or bypassing. While traction is not required, it is recommended in places. Snow pack has decreased due to recent warm temperatures and rain making the impact of bare boots minimal. Summit was clear with views of the lakes to the south and the Belknap range to the north. Descent was windward with hard pack and ice as considerations, and making traction helpful. |
