 | Comments: |
Shoulder season conditions have returned.
Little snow remains at base elevations in this area, but snow remains in the northwestern Lakes Region.
Mt. Rowe Trail prior to the water crossing was mostly dry (there was a stretch with water running down it, but I cleared the leaf dam out of the dip). Some ice/frozen granular leading down to and out of the water crossing; I was able to bareboot that short stretch, but some may prefer Microspikes.
Yellow Trail initially had frozen granular, but the steeps were generally bare with occasional ice sandwiches (between leaf buns). Above about 1,400 feet, there was fairly consistent snowpack, 3-6" deep, but the trail (no drainage) was generally bare from run off.
The Ridge Trail had a few patches of frozen granular and some ledges that were a combination of black ice and water. Some may prefer Microspikes, albeit old ones due to the amount of exposed ledge. One could see Gunstock still had snow on the snowmaking trails, but didn't have a big holiday crowd.
North Spur had some frozen granular. Benjamin Weeks Trail had patches of snow on it, as well as areas of running water. Fairly consistent snow in the woods above 1,400' as well. Some muck further down, but generally avoidable with stepping stones.
Snowshoes will be superfluous on this loop until we get more snow.
Partly sunny skies with a slight breeze and temperatures hovering around freezing. Only encountered three other hikers this morning. |
