Pleasantly cold day, blue sky, unlimited views.
Walked up Haskell St. and put on snowshoes where the road continued but was not plowed. Followed road to first log yard and then a second at 1500'. In N corner of log yard we hopped on an overgrown skidder road that climbed at a moderate grade to a whippy log yard at 1700'. From here we followed overgrown log/skidder roads to a probable secondary snomo (currently not snomoed) trail at 1800'- approx equidistant between Forest and Jericho. Followed this to Forest. Returning from Forest, we followed this road until it turned N. From here we followed overgrown skidder roads to the northeastern wind turbine. Due to unlimited views in all directions we decided to follow access roads around the W side of the mountain up to approx the southwestern turbine where we climbed into the woods and followed the ridge in scratchy woods, on a short moderate grade, to the recognized summit. We noticed snowshoe tracks on the summit which we followed E to the road leading to the southeastern turbine. Followed our tracks back to the car.
Except for the wind turbine roads, our route enabled us to avoid plowed or snomoed road walks.
Entire area hiked is laced with confusing roads, and skidder/log roads in various conditions. Hike was planned using waypoints chosen on Caltopo and Google satellite views.
breaking effort - 2-8" powder on supportive base
grades - always easy, but moderate in the 2 short noted locations
vegetation - whippy log/skidder roads, all woods in this area are young growth hard woods |
