Comments
Comments: Snowshoes car to car, this entire route was less consolidated than I was expecting - started with about 4-6" at the trailhead, increased to 6-8" past the wilderness sign, 8-10" approaching the Scaur Ridge trail junction with 12+" drifts across the ridge in the usual places, but fortunately light fluffy snow everywhere. The gully section was tedious especially before the big left turn because many of the large rocks are still very much above the snow pack, which made for awkward footing at time either trying to balance snowshoes on rocks or wedge them into smaller spaces. There were some sections mostly above the Scaur Ridge trail junction of boilerplate ice covered by only 2-3" of snow (worst just below Middle summit) which made for tricky footing, even my MSR Lightning Ascents weren't getting good grip and I had to go off trail a few times to find powder that gave better grip. The trip down the steeps was a combination of careful footing, snowshoe skiing, intentional and unintentional butt sliding, once past the steeps it was a fairly easy cruise out - lots of rocks throughout that aren't completely covered though, even between the peaks my snowshoes hit the tops of a number of them. Old windblown tracks visible on Sabbaday Falls trail and at the junction at the top of North Slide (guessing these just go to the viewpoint at the top of the slide), no recent tracks on Scaur Ridge trail of south beyond Middle summit. Obviously these conditions will change with the rain later this week but posting this for people who may get out before then - if you go make sure to wear snowshoes, the two snowshoe tracks from today didn't make the trail nearly consolidated enough and anything less would be downright dangerous, inconsiderate and difficult on yourself. Saw Gracie the dog with her super friendly human between the peaks (thanks for tracking out the trail ahead of us!) but otherwise had the trails to ourselves today - a fantastic and challenging day out with Maddie dog - happy winter!
