 | Comments: |
A warm first day of winter leading to sticky surface layer of snow. Mountain trail is used as a snowmobile trail and is fully packed and easy to maneuver. Some open spots of mud/water. Turning up South Ridge, the trail is well packed with evidence of skis. As the trail steepens, recommend microspikes. Don't miss the overlook near the summit. Summit was windblown yet snow cover was ample. Quiet. Descent was well used by recent snowshoe traffic. Evidence of postholes although the surface depth did not make them hindersome or damaging. Slick decent and minor traction recommended all the way down to Shaw junction. Shaw was unused and the bridge out. Signage indicates that experienced hikers only should continue, which I confirmed. Trail beyond the junction was unbroken and trail markings would be difficult to follow for the uninitiated. Snowshoes required past this point. Evidence of other hikers picked up again at Split Rock, which had decent snow cover. Woronoco was well used. Minor traction or bare boot OK past this point to the end. |
