Comments: Was excited to x-c ski the Colonel. I figured with 24-30 inches in my Hanover location they must have gotten at least a few inches up north.....wrong! There was trace to 2" max of snow cover. started bare booting but quickly discovered treacherous slick ice under shallow snow cover so threw on the rock spikes and cruised. Prolific amount of snowshoe hare tracks. We soon followed a single fresh coyote track. It abruptly turned into an entire pack of coyote tracks. Somewhat unnerving when hiking solo with your dog. About 5 minutes later we ran into a fresh kill site right on trail. It was a bloody mess. Hiked the extra 60 seconds on Ice Ramparts to the scenic view bench. Stunning views of presi's, Owl's Head, and Garfield/Lafayette. Very quick 1:20 hike. Would recommend waiting for snow and x-c skiing it!
