Finally a legit winter day! The cover this trail provides meant the coldest part of the hike was along Rt 2 from Starr King Road to and from my vehicle at the Irving Station. First mile is a mess of frozen slush/postholes. Once you get up into the first section of mature hardwoods it gets better. Thanks to the folks who don’t wear snowshoes during this time of building trails to stay outside the snowshoe pack. I find it amazing that those who are strong enough to climb these mountains in winter, are too lazy to wear snowshoes when the conditions clearly merit. The snowshoe path that has been created, from the aforementioned area to the summit of Starr King and on to Waumbek is solid. Thanks to those who broke it out so I could cruise today in nothing more than spikes. |
