I tagged along with Bria and Danielle as they continue their redline adventure. Austin Brook was pretty walking in a few inches of slushy snow. When we took the left turn onto Gate Brook Trail snow started to increase as we walked up the west branch of Austin Brook, the rock slabs that line the bottom of the brook bed are lovely and a tempting place to visit in the summer. We followed Gates brook all the way down to the Yellow Trail intersection and then retraced our footsteps back up to the Middle Mtn Trail. The upper half of this out and back the trees were still bent over with snow and we had fun "saving" them. Also spied a woodpecker really going to down chopping away that didn't care we stood below him watching him work. Footprints in teh snow that had come up from Gates Brook Trail continued to First Mtn and we made fresh tracks to Middle. On Middle's summit we were treated to a show of clouds opening and covering the view, It was amazing and then a rainbow appeared for us right before it started to rain on us. Luckily it was light and the rain stopped shortly after it started. We continued to make frirst tracks down Middle but half way to the Peabody intersection we came to a place where someone had come up from Peabody but then turned around. Peabody Trail was tracked up heavily from Saturday's traffic. Sunday was quiet and except for a man walking his two dogs at the start of our hike on Austin Brook we saw no one else all day. As mentioned in trail Maintenance notes blowdowns on lower part of Peabody Trail and on gates brook between Yellow Trail and Middle trail intersections. |
