Snowshoes are completely, absolutely necessary right now. It's been too warm since the storm - the snow is soft and not set; it needs a few freeze/thaw cycles, and then another storm, then another round of packing-down, and some consistently low temperatures before it's suitable for spikes or bare boots. On my way up, I thought the trail was a disaster, full of postholes - until I passed two bare-booters as they stopped to put on microspikes (????? guys! what the heck!) After that it was smoother going, although there was another person out postholing today. Figured they'd turn around, but I passed them again on my way down about 1/2 mile from the summit, so the trail will likely be in rough shape tomorrow. There MIGHT have been one or two snowshoers behind them, but... |
