Out/back to North and South Kinsman from the east side. Barebooted up to the lake (no tracks across it, not sure if it's solid yet) and then changed to snowshoes for the remainder of the hike. Lonesome Lake Tr was packed well enough from the trailhead to make boots/spikes fine, with almost total snow coverage of the ground but still some lumpy parts. Once on Fishin Jimmy, snow got deeper and the start of a nice snowshoe track/base is forming. The steeper/scrambly sections on the upward part as you approach Kinsman Pond were covered by snow and manageable with care - there are some short bypasses for those tricky sections tracked out as well. The KRT from Kinsman Junction to Mt Kinsman Tr junction was choppy and postholed, but newly re-broken/packed by myself and 2 other snowshoers, and it's in nicer shape now. KRT up to the peaks was a nice snowshoe track but getting covered by new flurries and drifts as the day wore on. All in all a nice day out to dust off the Tubbs for the season!
** PSA: bring your snowshoes :) |
