Starting from the end of FR37, I bushwhacked through open woods to a beaver bog with great views of Passaconaway; from here I continued through relatively open forest to the base of Passaconaway and the 1938 eastern slide, passing by a remote logging camp along the way. I found great conditions on the 1938 slide, with good footing and very little ice. At the top of the slide, I slabbed west through thick woods until I reached the heavily revegetated track of the 1800s slide; microspikes went on at around 3400ft to aid with the sporadic ice and snow in the gully. There were a few large rocks to bypass, but nothing too bad, and the occasional ledge viewpoint offered some great views back to the beaver bog. At one point near the ridge crest, I heard hikers talking about five yards away from me (on the Walden Trail); the summit was only .2 miles away, but since I wanted to bushwhack the mountain from base to summit, I descended a fair distance and then re-ascended the summit cone at a different angle, pushing through heinous deadfall. I found no other people on the summit, and the Walden Trail had some easy sections of ice on the descent. |
