Date of Hike
Date of Hike: Saturday, November 14, 2020
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: I got a spot right by the train tracks a little around 7:30am. Still several spots left. I don’t think cars had overflowed into the road by the time I returned around 10:15ish.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Ice - Black, Snow - Trace/Minimal Depth, Wet Trail, Wet/Slippery Rock, Ice - Breakable Crust, Mud - Minor/Avoidable, Mud - Significant
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment:
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: All the crossings were easily walked/hopped across but I could certainly see how they could be difficult or impassable at high water. Given the rain last night, water has risen significantly and they may have to be waded today/tomorrow.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: Avalon Trail was occasionally blazed in yellow. I think A-Z Trail was as well. Not so sure Mt Tom Spur was blazed but I wasn’t paying close attention. All trails are well travelled and easy to follow though. No blowdowns that I recall. Significant erosion on the trails, parity with down low due to all the use they get.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: A few seen. Some, if not all, were leashed. No problems with any. This is a suitable trail for hiking dogs.
Bugs
Bugs: None

Comments
Comments: A quick morning out-and-back to Tom for my 21st 4000 footer this month and 29th for my November grid. 19 left to go. Only two people out ahead of me when I started around 7:30am. One more passed me on my way up. Saw lots of people coming down but nothing crazy. Many going to Willard too. The other early birds I saw all seemed to be headed to Field. Started out in the mid 30s. Only got a few degrees warmer by the time I returned. No sun and quite windy too made for a chilly morning with no warmth.

The trail was wet from a light dusting of snow overnight that had mostly melted at low elevation (although you could see a little bit in the notch) by morning. It began to appear on trail before too long but never really had any depth to it even at elevation. Too thin to offer much in the of tricky footing but it was a bit slick. Not much in the way of ice other than a puddle on the Mt Tom Spur that was concealing some deep mud. Most other mud was frozen or close to it and thus not much of an issue. Other recent hikes involved a lot of black ice though so perhaps this later iced up too? In any case, I did not feel a need for microspikes although some others were using them in the snow.
