Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: We got a late start today, and it nearly cost us the hike. Oh my goodness, the parking lot was a mad house. By some miracle we got a parking spot, but we were there for about 10 minutes wondering where else to go before we got lucky.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Dry Trail, Snow - Trace/Minimal Depth, Standing/Running Water on Trail, Mud - Minor/Avoidable
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment:
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: All easy rock hops
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: The trail is generally in excellent condition. The only exception was a whack-around at 1600'
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Great trail for athletic dogs, although the conditions were marginal today due to wind chill. A good coat was a must today on the exposed ridge. There were lots of water sources down low, and even a couple puddles along the ridge (although they were freezing over).
Bugs
Bugs: Do tourists count? They were swarming...

Comments
Comments: This is a magnificent trail, and it wasn't as hard as the internet said it would be. Much of the flat section was impressively smooth and easy on the feet/ankles. We intended to do the full loop. ascending the Red Ridge first, then going over North Moat to descend. The wind and cold got borderline brutal (for autumn) on the upper parts of Red Ridge, but in the trees it was fine. Some small patches of snow were above ~2400'. We had brought micro-spikes, but we encountered no meaningful ice. I didn't expect the summit of Red Ridge to be so freaking cool. At this point, my hiking partner (who is still working her way back from surgery) decided her body had done enough vert for the day, and so we headed back down the Red Ridge instead of attempting North Moat. We will return to do the full loop!
