| Water Crossing Notes: |
Most crossings were relatively easy but required some thought. Tons of water in the path on upper Great Gulf Trail. These crossings would be pretty difficult at times of high water. |
|
| Trail Maintenance Notes: |
Great Gulf Trail had tons of water in the trail, especially between where Six Husbands Trail breaks off and Spaulding Lake. I am aware that these trails are in a wilderness, but a couple things could use some help. Somebody did a good job clearing all of the blowdowns just below Spaulding Lake. The section of trail ascending the headwall of the Great Gulf was very difficult to follow.
Chandler Brook Trail was very rough and muddy and slippery. It was tight, slightly overgrown, and it looked like not much work had been put into it. Although I know this is an unpopular trail. My Dad whacked his head on a sawed blowdown in the trail a bit above Clam Rock. |

Beautiful hike!!
Very nice, early views from The Bluff of the Northern Presidentials. We passed several designated trailside camping areas. One campsite at The Bluff, one campsite at Clam Rock, and one campsite between the Sphinx and Six Husbands trails. Lots of excellent waterfalls. Spaulding Lake was spectacular. The section of trail up the headwall of the Great Gulf was very hard to follow. Look for yellow blazes and tiny cairns. This part of the trail generally follows a south-southeast heading. This trail has a 5000 foot vertical elevation gain to the summit of Washington but it is spread out over 7.8 miles. So other than the headwall, the trail wasn’t too steep. Saw Claude hiking on his 60th birthday.
On the way down we took the winter cutoff on the Auto Road that starts at the top of the Wamsutta Trail. It was mostly easy to follow, except for a part in the middle where the trees grew very densely.
Chandler Brook trail was very steep and rough, hard to follow in the upper section, but had lots of beautiful waterfalls.
