Comments
Comments: After a quick crossing of the Hancock Branch, I bushwhacked south in the direction of the Scar Ridge northwest slides and then ascended the steep eastern side of Black Mountain. I visited five different ledges in search of a straight-ahead view of the slides, but unfortunately each view was obscured by spruce branches. After topping out on Black, I followed the ridge south and picked up the herd path to Loon Mountain (North Peak); along the way I heard a series of loud crashing noises coming from the direction of the slides. This of course was a rockfall resulting from the freeze-thaw cycle — I am glad I had made the decision to avoid that area today! I didn’t see any “no trespassing” or “no hikers” signs where the herd path emerges onto Loon’s property, and I caught an hour-long nap (no other folks on Loon) and then enjoyed the sunset before descending the ski slopes via headlamp.
