The Black Pond Bushwhack/Herd Path was very difficult to follow after Black Pond due to snow cover.
Did not see Brutus Bushwhack and almost missed Owls Head Path. We briefly tried to go up Owls Head Path but felt it would be too difficult to stay on the trail. Due to cold/wet conditions we thought it was best to turn back. Going back was nice because our tracks in the snow were fairly easy to follow even though there were continuous flurries.
Steam crossing were a bit tricky but managed to mostly walk across the rocks. Water levels were mid calf to knee deep so care should be taken with cold temperatures. If planning on removing boots is your plan then beware that when we got back to car it was very difficult to remove boots as boots & laces were frozen in ice. I'm new to cold weather hiking and found hiking poles conducted heat away from my gloved hands so my glove choice which normally would be good for running proved to not work well. I had backup heavier gloves but it was not so bad that I wanted to stop to get them out. |
