| Parking/Access Road Notes: |
Got to the trailhead at 0915 and there were only about 6 cars. When we came back the lot was packed. There is an iron ranger so make sure to bring $ if you plan to hike. |

| Surface Conditions: |
Ice - Black, Snow - Trace/Minimal Depth, Wet Trail, Wet/Slippery Rock, Leaves - Significant/Slippery |
|
| Recommended Equipment: |
Light Traction |
|
| Water Crossing Notes: |
Water crossings would not have been difficult if exposed rocks were not icy. Water isn't too high but not having good footing made the crossings challenging. On our way back down we noticed that another group of hikers layered fallen branches across the second crossing creating makeshift bridge. |

| Trail Maintenance Notes: |
Trail was well maintained. Great stairwork throughout the trail. |

| Dog-Related Notes: |
Saw many dogs on the trail. Definitely dog friendly. |

| Comments: |
Although a relatively easy hike, the trail was covered in black ice. Granite slabs had frozen runoff on them making it challenging to get around. We hike about 1-mile away from the summit and decided not to go any further as the ice was concerning in areas (yes, we are prepared hikers, and had spikes and all the appropriate winter gear). We saw many other hikers continuing on, many who lacked gear and proper footwear. Despite our warnings they continued on. We took the detour around Pitcher a d Champney falls on our hike down and it was absolutely breathtaking, but, there was black ice all over the trail resulting in a gnarly fall and bruised forearm. This is a beautiful hike but not safe for those without gear or experience this time of year. Safe hiking! |
