Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: Trails in generally good condition. There are some eroded spots such as the Willey Range Trail below Mt Field toward the Field-Willey col. Downed trees on the Avalon Trail above the A-Z junction and on the Willey Range Trail between Field and Willey. One small tree 5 feet above surface on the A-Z Trail just down hill of the Field-Tom col. None of the downed trees were difficult to get by. The corridor leading to the Mt Tom viewpoint is tight with spruce growth. The trail work on the Avalon Trail has improved the footing from the notch up to Mt Avalon.

Comments
Comments: The maximum snow depth was perhaps 2 inches. However the snow cover was usually less and there was bare ground in sun exposed spots. Icy surfaces will be encountered with the most difficult on the steep section of the Avalon Trail from the A-Z junction and Mt Avalon. That said, I ascended without traction for most of this stretch by careful foot placement. Eventually I wore microspikes rather than concentrating on footing.
Great views from Avalon and the Willey outlook. Some views from Mt Field. The Mt Tom views are over the tree tops and should improve with a snow pack.
Lots of friendly hikers out on the western side of Crawford Notch today. The Gray Jays put in appearances at Mt Avalon and Mt Willey.
