Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: Small lot off York Pond Road. Can hold 5-6 cars, not including roadside parking. This was my first weekend in this area so the lot was full with 6 cars consciously parked roadside. York Pond Road is paved past the gate then turns into a good gravel road all the way to the parking area. Any vehicle would be fine. I do not know how far this is plowed in winter. Gate hours posted are 0700 to 1600 (4pm).
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Snow - Trace/Minimal Depth, Ice - Blue, Ice - Breakable Crust, Mud - Minor/Avoidable
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment: Light Traction
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: I can’t remember if this crossing is on the York Pond Trail or the Bunnell Notch... either way: there is one main crossing that presents issues with ice. The crossing would have been straightforward except with the ice. Our shoes, and morale, got wet...
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: None.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Good trail for dogs.
Bugs
Bugs: Nope
Lost and Found
Lost and Found: One frozen thin grey hat on a branch on the Kilkenny.

Comments
Comments: We were out to test some winter gear set ups as I am still injured and can’t go that far. Cabot was a goal, not worth it today. Though beautiful weather, we elected to hike to the limits of our gear, physical limitations and morale mentality.

The snow levels were trace amounts in the morning, melted in sun drenched areas in the afternoon. The ice presented much more of an issue (significantly slowed travel time) beyond the old Mount Cabot Trail. I encourage use of traction the last mile before the summit. But the ice is in short sections so you decide if spikes are needed until the snow really starts up.

These trails are not blazed. The corridor is apparent at this time. This is a muddy trail at baseline (I mean what Kilkenny trail ISN’T?!?!). Waterproof boots seemed to be most advantageous. Best of luck and don’t break yourself on wet rocks!!!
