Peaks White Horse Ledge, NH
Trails
Trails: Bryce Link, Bryce Path, White Horse Ledge Trail, Red Ridge Link
Date of Hike
Date of Hike: Sunday, October 18, 2020
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: Lots of vehicles parked at the Bryce Link trailheads on Cathedral Ledge Road - I snagged one of the last spots. Lots of cars on the road itself - probably most of them were driving to the top of Cathedral Ledge. Somewhat fewer cars when I got back.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Dry Trail, Wet Trail, Wet/Slippery Rock, Leaves - Significant/Slippery
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment:
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: Only a couple very minor one-step crossings.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: Signs were all in place. No major blowdowns that I can remember. Considerable erosion on the steep section of Bryce Path. A couple spots on the lower White Horse Ledge Trail were the route of the trail wasn't obvious through all the boulders.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Saw a few. One person asked me if I thought their dog could make it down the steep section of Bryce Path. My view is that an experienced, agile trail dog shouldn't have too much difficulty on that section.
Bugs
Bugs: None.
Lost and Found
Lost and Found: While I was watching the rock climbers on White Horse Ledge at the end of the hike, one of the climbers dropped a small black carrying-case down the rock face. It landed in the gully at the bottom of the rock face almost directly in front of where I was sitting. I retrieved it and put it on a rock right next to that location.

Comments
Comments: Nice midday hike to White Horse Ledge, with the goal of completing redlining of all the trails in the area. Bryce Link is gentle - just follow the large, prominent yellow blazes since there are several intersecting old roads. The steep section of Bryce Path was quite eroded in places but not too bad - there's only one partial rock scramble in that section. White Horse Ledge Trail up to the summit of White Horse Ledge was a moderate climb, mostly in the woods but with a few excellent outlooks. Red Ridge Link is not the most exciting trail ever, but was easy to follow, and I guess it serves its purpose of connecting the trails on White Horse Ledge with the trails on the Moats.

White Horse Ledge Trail descending was mostly in good shape, however in some parts the blazing seemed to be done with only ascending hikers in mind - there were several turns that were clearly blazed for ascending hikers, but much more difficult to notice for descending hikers. At the bottom, I took the climbers' path to the base of White Horse Ledge and watched some of the climbers there - rock climbers have always impressed me.

Lots of people out enjoying what turned out to be a very nice fall day. No ice or snow anywhere on this hike - how many more weekends this year will I be able to say that?
