Date of Hike
Date of Hike: Saturday, October 3, 2020
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: Easiest parking was from the Cannon tramway parking lot. It was nearly full by 8am. I would suggest arriving early to avoid any parking issues.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Wet Trail, Wet/Slippery Rock, Standing/Running Water on Trail, Mud - Minor/Avoidable, Leaves - Significant/Slippery
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment:
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: No true water crossings on this trail but plenty of water. All standing water was easily avoidable.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: No significant blow downs on the trail.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Lots of pups on the trail today including my own. In my opinion, this trail is fine for dogs that are used to hiking in the Whites. The trails are what you would expect from a 4000 footer, steep with some slab and scrambling.
Bugs
Bugs: None
Lost and Found
Lost and Found: None

Comments
Comments: We decided to hike Cannon to enjoy the fall leaf colors, but ended up at the summit while it was still in the clouds. Reviews of this trail are a bit deceiving. The hike is "short" and "easier" relative to some of the other 4000 footers, but it's not a beginners hike. It requires the same respect as other trails in the White, that is, proper footwear, water, and warm clothes (especially around now when the temps are deceiving). We saw plenty of hikers who were struggling/slipping in basic sneakers (or non-athletic shoes) and shivering cold at the summit. Please be safe when hiking in the Whites. They are beautiful but also unforgiving! Also, please be mindful of COVID policies, in particular, your hiking group size. Do your part to protect yourself and others around you so we can continue to enjoy outdoor spaces!! We saw at least two groups of 15+ people trekking up the mountain with very little regard for anyone else.

Overall, beautiful hike! It's fun, not terribly hard, but crowded for leaf season! One more 4000 footer down!
