The Dry River Trail is about as good as it gets right now. The water levels are low, the trail is mostly dry, and the blowdowns are minimal. In non-drought conditions this trail is covered with mud pits and has a ton of feeder streams crossing the trail, but right now very few of those streams are running at all and that deep suck your foot in mud is limited to a few sections past the shelter. There are occasionally points where it's not obvious where the trail goes (like after the shelter), but if you are patient and look around you will figure it out. Sections of the upper trail are very overgrown. Past the shelter there were only two water sources I would have been comfortable filtering from and they were both much higher up than I expected. One is around the part of the trail where it starts to really get steep and push up the headwall. Not long before this section there is a blowdown in the trail that has caused a herd path to a tentsite to become the new trail by walking around the tree. The environment nearing the top of headwall is amazing. Tons of cool plants. I didn't have any problem finding the trail here.
Crawford path was fine. I was in the clouds and going cairn to cairn. No issues following the trail.
The Mt Eisenhower trail is a nice one. Some duck unders and step overs, but nothing that took any time to navigate. There was one almost completely dry patch of mud and then one mud puddle, but it was completely dry otherwise. There is no water on this trail in normal times either.
Crossed the river on Mt Eisenhower Trail and on the DRT past the falls and the crossings were super easy. I have never seen the river this low before. Both pretty mindless rock hops. It's hard to imagine this trail ever being easier to do thanks to the low water and good maintenance.
FOUND: Pair of eye glasses with long narrow frames were found on the Dry River Trail as I was heading out on Friday September 25. Email me if you think they might be yours. |
