 | Parking/Access Road Notes: |
I parked in the lot on the right, in front of the Village shops. If that fills on weekends, Lot 1 is not too much farther on the left on Stratton Mountain Road. |

 | Comments: |
Instead of using the AT/LT from the south, I climbed from the north using the resort ski trails. The web site suggests specific uphill routes, but typical of ski resorts, the signage is incomplete, even on the downhill. I ascended twice. First I did a counter-clockwise loop, going up the right (west) side of the resort boundary (roughly, Lower Wanderer, West Meadow, and Work Rd.); at the top taking the Fire Tower Trail out and back (the tower is open now); and then descending more to the east (mostly via Black Bear). After a break, I went up and down directly on an excellent footpath below the gondola (Lower Standard and Upper Standard), a steep 1.4 mile climb of 2000 feet.
I highly recommend the ski slopes approach to Stratton, especially before the resort opens for skiers. The views from the slopes, as well as from the fire tower, are magnificent. |
