Date of Hike: Sunday, September 6, 2020
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: The main parking area was full and overflowing by 10am. I heard it was pretty full even by 7:30am... I think most others opted to park at the Irving station lot but there’s a lot closer by practically opposite the Starr King Rd that’s much closer by (just beyond the golf course if headed west). It’s just a grassy clearing next to a blue house. It’s meant for hikers though. Go slowly on Start King Road as there are some large potholes/bumps in it.
Surface Conditions

Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment:
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: None
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: Mount Start King Trail is blazed in yellow and is done so regularly and somewhat frequently. No blowdowns that I recall.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Saw several. Most or all were leashed. All were well behaved. We even noticed several dog owners giving their dog water, food, etc. So nice to see responsible dog owners and their furry friends out :)
Bugs
Bugs: I think I saw one mosquito on me park at the parking lot. That was it! :D
Lost and Found
Lost and Found: Picked up some small trash unintentionally left :)

Comments
Comments: A nice hike with mom and dad to try and get another 52WAV and a 48 if they were feeling up to it. We all made it to Starr King and two of us continued on to Waumbek. It was a perfect weather day. Not too hot, not too cold, a breeze, but not windy and a nice mix of sun and clouds, but all above the summits. It was great :)

The trail is VERY dry to Starr King. The spring on the way is totally dry. Not even the smallest sign of a wet spot or any water. Freaky. Only the slightest traces of dried mud on the trail. Between Start King and Waumbek, there were a few spots of severe mud to avoid but easily negotiable. Just didn’t want to dunk a trail runner in them.

This trail is nicer than most main trails that go to a 4000 footer. Never steep, and all easy-moderate grades and relatively good footing. The trail is much gentler between Starr King and Waumbek than it is to Starr King. Make sure to go the 50yds beyond the summit of Waumbek along Kilkenny Ridge Trail to the viewpoint toward the Presidentials.

Nice to see so many happy people out responsibly enjoying the mountains. Many good conversations and smiles were shared :)
