Comments
Comments: A work friend always says, "Things happen for a reason." We were going to Smarts Mtn after debating some other choices. Not only was the morning getting on, but I missed the turn and ended up having a scenic drive of the Grafton Turnpike. Long story short, a guy told me we could get to Holt's Ledge. It was a pleasant ascent through the woods. We took a look at the Trapper John Shelter. Cool chimney and outhouse. The ledges have nice views, but you must stand to look, as there is a chain link fence across the area. This is a Peregrine Falcon nesting area that needed protection. The AT continues to the right. A path on the left takes you to the top of the ski area.

This was a pleasant surprise. Great view of Smarts Mountain from here. Papoose ski trail is recommended for descent, as it is not a knee killer and there are still great views on your way down. Halfway down there is a huge glacial erratic on the opposite side of the trail. Lots of pretty late summer/early fall flowers and many butterflies and grasshoppers. To be honest, when we got back to the car and took another look at the WMG, we discovered we may not have gone all the way to the top of the Ledges, but what we did see was fantastic.

After this hike, we drove to the Lambert Ridge trailhead to make sure of its location. Easy, but as another oerson mentioned, do NOT park on the side of the road.
