Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: Plenty of space left at 8am. I did notice what seems to be a new overflow parking area on the west side of the notch road just a few yards before the turn-in to the main lot. Still plenty of space at 3:30pm, but a couple at the side of the driveway into the lot.

Comments
Comments: Nice day to be up there. Breezy above treeline, but temp fine with just a windbreaker on. Oddly, the wind was almost calm by the signs right below the top, where we had lunch. Nice views. The day-long cloud cap on Washington made an impressive sight. Despite the short 2.5 miles (listed, anyway) trail to the top, it always feels longer. That's a tough trail to make good time on, above the outlook at 1.0 mile in. The Cornice isn't much better - a lot of large boulders to scramble over. Coming down over the lower cap, we met a couple going up with a small kid maybe 6 YO, who was enjoying the hike. But that was well after 2pm, and afterward I wondered if they'd have time to get up and back down in daylight, given the ledges to be climbed using hands both ways and the kid's size. I figured they likely would have been ok, but I always think back to a time late in the day three decades ago when I wound up carrying a small boy down much of the Jewell trail in a Gerry kid backpack, while his dad carried an even younger girl on his hip and his wife followed with my nearly empty pack; we got down to the cog base in twilight.
