Did the loop up Gale River Trail to the hut and Galehead via Garfield Ridge Trail and Frost Trail, across the Garfield Ridge Trail to the Garfield summit, down the Garfield Trail, and back to my car at the Gale River Trailhead along Gale River Loop Road. I got on the trail at about 5:30, so I had to use a headlamp for about 45 minutes until the sun was up enough. Gale River Trail was a delight and only got tough for the last half mile or so on the steep ascent to the ridge. Didn't see anyone until I got to Galehead at about 8:00. Saw a steady but surprisingly light stream of hikers on Garfield Ridge Trail doing the Pemi Loop. The ridge was a struggle with the rugged ups and downs on the Garfield sub-peaks, and the steep ascent to the peak. Garfield summit was busy but not overcrowded when I got there around 11:00, and there was a bit of excitement as someone had completed their 48! It was forecast for lots of clouds but it was clear all day with excellent visibility on top of Garfield, which was a very nice surprise. The trip down Garfield Trail was very nice and easy on my already tired joints and muscles, and the road walk was a pleasant (but boring) 1.6 miles. |
