Trails
Trails: Bartlett Mountain Trail
Date of Hike
Date of Hike: Friday, August 28, 2020
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: DO NOT PARK AT THE CONDOS. To access this trail one must park down at Mt Surprise, hike up that, then hop on this trail. It does seem okay to walk through the condo area as well; just don’t park there.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Dry Trail
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment:
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: None. We saw one little puddle of water toward the beginning of the trail. Otherwise, everything was bone dry.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: For what I believe is considered an unofficial or abandoned trail, it was blazed relatively well in yellow. Note that there was also some blue blaze mixed in down low. It didn’t look like a property boundary or anything like that to me. There are lots of blowdowns on this trail, almost all of which are in the first half of the trail. The first huge one or two, the path has been rerouted around. However, there is another cluster of blowdowns further up without a path around it. My recommendation is to take your pack off and just slide on your belly underneath it. You can also get through where the tree was uprooted but there’s some treacherous footing there so be careful. Then you either have to bushwhack around (recommended) or finagle you’re way through some smaller blowdowns which looked pretty tough. I bushwhacked around to the right on the way up but that proved very roundabout as the trail turned to the left on the other side of the blowdown. There’s a number of other straddles, stepovers, etc. some of which are very large. All that said, most things had been trimmed and it’s clear that this trail still receives some maintenance. Lots of eroded trail and some eroded footing as well.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Should be an okay trail for dogs if they can handle some steep ledges and trail. Bring water as there isn’t any.
Bugs
Bugs: Practically non-existent. Yay!
Lost and Found
Lost and Found: None

Comments
Comments: I’d been eyeing this one for a long time. When all the parking was taken Friday morning by 11am at the Green Hills lot (a planned hike to Peaked Mtn) I convinced my parents to hike this instead. I’d originally wanted to do this as a loop or an put-and-back from Kearsage North but that wasn’t happening with my parents with me so we stuck to an out-and-back.

The trail is quite steep overall, particularly near its beginning to the first outlook. It gets slightly less steep after that, then moderates after another half mile maybe. Then, just before the summit, climbs some very steep ledges. The first lookout is a fine objective within itself. If you do go to the summit though, make sure to do the view spur just beyond it. On Gaia, it’s where the summit is shown (which is clearly incorrect as it’s outside of the highest topos line). In addition tot he steepness down low, the trail is often sandy and gravelly in that area leading to some slippery and treacherous footing. I wiped out a couple times. Then again, that’s typical for me ;)
