Fantastic day on some sections of trail I have been wanting to see. Based on some prior trip reports I was concerned that Kenduskeag would be very hard to follow from Highwater to SM summit. Fake news as it is easy to find and a wonderful trail. More vert than I had expected on the Shelburne trail. Yes, Kenduskeag trail from SM summit down to Rattle River is a bit overgrown but easily passable. Carter Moriah is the usual AT grindo to the summit of Moriah. I actually had Moriah all to myself for my extended lunch break. It was very un-White mountian like. Moriah Brook remains boot sucking muddy up high as it has multiple springs. I actually saw six people on MB which was unusual, including the one aforementioned female semi lost hiker. At one point on the descent MB trail seems to empty in to the brook with no exit. Using common sense and Gaia I followed the creek bed for about 200 yds and then popped up on the bank to find the trail without issue. I don't recall this issue when I ascended MB last year. It's a bit overgrown in spots and I must have missed the turn. Happy to report that Highwater has been re-routed and it doesn't just disappear. I crossed upstream of the campground and road walked back to the car.15.3 miles and just shy of 4k on this loop. For the honed this loop is probably mostly runable. I'm old and broken so I run flat stuff. |
