Removing that one blowdown turned into a lot more work than I expected. I initially trimmed the crown back, so the huge hanging part swung neatly off the trail. Unfortunately, it was then easy to push this huge hanging part back and forth like a pendulum.. I didn't want to leave it like that. It would have been a very dangerous kid magnet.
So I ended up chopping the whole tree down, and then chopping thru that same 18" girth another 5 times, in order to clear it off the trail.
Did I mentioned this involved a trip back to the car to get my new 2lb cruising ax, after getting totally drenched in a thunderstorm, and another trip back to the car to get my other ax after I snapped the handle off my new one? Sometimes you get the bear, and sometimes the bear gets you!! |
